October 1908 - Ford Motor Company Unveils the Model T
Between the years of 1908 and 1927, Ford Motor Company would build around 15 million Model T cars.
Before the Model T, cars were out of reach for the typical American. Though at first, the Model T was fairly expensive for the times (the cheapest one around $825, or $18,000 in today’s market), it was intended to be used by ordinary people every day. Running on a 22-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and using a newly produced heat-treated steel, pioneered by French race car makers, this vehicle was lighter and more substantial than the precursors were.
Ford wanted to ensure prices were kept low and affordable, so they built just one model that allowed the company’s engineers to develop parts that reduced waste, saved time and allowed for unskilled workers to assemble the cars. By 1914, the moving assembly line made it possible to produce thousands of cars every week!
By the 1920s, many Americans wanted options when it came to style, color, speed and luxury too. As tastes changed, the era of the Model T came to an end and the last one rolled off the assembly line on May 26, 1927.
