Riding on Thin Tread
The amount of tread on your tire is imperative to your safety - when you check the air pressure, make sure you also check the tread. You can visually inspect the tire's tread and sidewall for any damage or signs of excessive or uneven wear.
You can measure the tread remaining on your tire by using a small ruler that has 1/16" gradations. Measure across the outer edge, center, and inside edge of the tire. The higher the measurement, the more tread you have left on your tire. If the measurements are uneven, you might have pressure problems or need an alignment. Once the tire tread reaches 3/32 of an inch, it's time to replace it. For more information, you can visit the AAA Tire Safety and Maintenance webpage.
